About us

It was a stormy November night, and James and I were trying to hear each other above the noise of peak-time drinkers in a busy Oxford pub. We discovered we both had a passion for books and a background in publishing: James used to work for Random House, I used to work for HarperCollins. We discussed how big businesses can naturally be more reluctant to take risks or put their best resources on debut authors or unusual concepts and felt as an indie publisher that's what we wanted to do.

We wondered many great manuscripts lie undiscovered because the author lacks the confidence to approach an agent or self-publish, and how many talents like JK Rowlings or Sebastian Faulks are out there wondering how to get published...that's how Yolk was born.
